Catalog of Bolt and Nut Puzzles

Introduction to Bolt and Nut Puzzles

In his Puzzles Old and New published 1893, Professor Hoffmann describes several puzzles where a part must be unscrewed to get access to a
Compartment. Quite often, such a puzzle uses reverse thread and in several cases, the rotating part is also blocked by an invisible pin that must be moved apart first by shaking the object so that gravity moves the blocking pin to a harmlesss position. In some way, such puzzles can be regarded as predecessors of bolt and nut puzzles.

The earliest known patent for a Bolt and Nut puzzle is U.S. Patent 1,111,337 by W.E. Watkins, dated Sept. 22, 1913. The bolt has a a circumferential groove; the nut has six radial bores, closed at the outside, and in each of these chambers is a steel ball. Some of these ball will also partly find a place in the groove around the bolt, thus blocking the nut from being unscrewed. The solution is holding the bolt vertically, spin it and centrifugal force moves all balls into their chambers, thus allowing the nut to be unscrewed.

This patent describes an already all but trivial mechanism. Three simpler mechanisms are likely earlier but perhaps never patented. These are:

Type 1: The bolt is cut into two parts and the nut, usually a longer than normal nut, holds both parts together. Close inspection soon reveals that bolt ends of the bolt slightly rotate with respect to each other and also that the nut does rotate in both directions, but it soon blocks. The invisible ends of of the two bolt parts are cleverly machined in a basically simple way that contributes to this blocking of the nut. There are no other parts like balls or pins and taking the three parts apart may look impossible for the unexperienced child or beginner, but it is in fact pretty simple. Usually, there is also a washer somewhere between the head of the bolt and the nut, and the puzzle is then presented as a 'remove the washer' puzzle. Sometimes, the washer is even bent open to form part of a helix and slits in the head of the bolt suggest that the washer can be 'unscrewed' through these slits. Much is done as a disguise for the real problem.

Type 2: The nut is welded or otherwise permanently fixed to the end part of the bolt. Removing the nut from that apart of the bolt is impossible. So removing a washer implies a trick somewhere else. In fact, the bolt is again cut into 2 parts with the nut welded or otherwise permanently fixed to the end part, and the rest of the bolt is simply screwed into the nut and can be unscrewed without much force.

Type 3: In a way a variation or further development of type 2. Now the two parts are screwed together using a secret thinner bolt hiding inside. In most cases, that thinner bold uses reverse thread to make the 'simple' unscrewing even less obvious.

Starting only in the 1970s, more
Complicated mechanism were designed and crafted by several puzzle designers, both in Europe and in the USA. Often based on one of the above mentioned types, but with extra pins, balls, springs and/or moving parts. Many of those bolt puzzles look alike or almost alike and show little markings to help identifying them. An agony for puzzle enthusiasts when a new acquisition turns out to be another type 1 or type 2 instead of posing a new challenge in taking it apart. And exactly that is the reason for this catalog: not to describe all types 1, 2 or 3 that can be found everywhere, but to provide means to identify a bolt and nut puzzle as being a more complicated one and whenever possible even to identify it
Completely, though still without providing anything about how to solve such a puzzle.

PREFACE: The following is nothing more than a first attempt for such a catalog of bolt+nut puzzles, especially those which are hard to identify since they look very much like another bolt+nut puzzle.

Bolt size is preferably the diameter (of the actual bolt, not of the head) and the total length. Both measured in mm. A letter M is added for metric bolts, standard in most parts of the world. For metric bolts, the diameter is always a multiple of 2 mm, unless for very thin (less than 8 mm) or very thick (above 24 mm) bolts. The length is the full length, including the head:

Most bolt have marks stamped on the head: letters coding the manufacturer, and two digits coding the mechanical strength. (W)These may sometimes help to identify the bolf and nut puzzle.

All suggestions, additions, corrections, further details, etc. will be gracefully received and processed.
